Unilever Lipton Management/Contractors Instigate Violent Attacks On Khanewal Action Committee Members

08.09.2009

Faced with the possibility of losing the highly lucrative labour supply contracts that have underpinned the disposable jobs regime at Unilever Pakistan’s Lipton tea factory for two decades, contractors are colluding with factory management to instigate violent attacks on the workers campaigning for the right to direct, permanent jobs. The provocations follow on the public call by the UK National Contact Point of the OECD for government-mediated talks to reach a negotiated resolution to the IUF's complaint to the OECD that Unilever's massive use of casual labour at Khanewal violates the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.

UK Trade Union Congress Calls on Unilever to Halt 'Blatantly Discriminatory' Attacks and Start Negotiating

23.07.2009
In a letter to Unilever CEO Paul Polman, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber has called on the company to seriously enter into good faith negotiations for a settlement to the dispute over disposable jobs at the company's Lipton tea plant in Khanewal. "The global trade union movement is deeply concerned at the employment practices at Unilever's Khanewal factory in Pakistan", writes Barber. "The upcoming [OECD] mediation represents an excellent chance for Unilever to redress these discriminatory practices by providing decent work for all in its supply chains and begin to repair its global reputation." Read more.
