Coca-Cola Workers in Barnaul, Russia, organised into a union

At the end of april, workers at Coca-Cola HBC Eurasia in Barnaul in Siberia, Russia, formed a new trade union organisation. Its chairman became Alexei Simon, working already many years in the company as market development agent.

The new union immediately established contact with other workers organisations in Coca-Cola, as well as with the IUF-affiliated union at the nearby Nestlé factory. The new union also take the decision to affiliates to the IUF.

A number of issues contributed to the decision of the workers to unite into a union: unfair dismissals, unsatisfactory work schedules and overtime not adequately paid for, as well as a failure to index wages by inflation.

Alexei Simon: "We organised the union in order to make the company act in the framework of the labour legislation, and to improve our terms and conditions."

The union has worked out an action plan to solve a number of contested issues.

We congratulate the workers in Barnaul to their important step and assure them of our support and solidarity!
