US: Teamsters on strike at Coca-Cola Consolidated

July 15. Teamsters in Southwest Alabama and Southeast Missouri went on strike at Coca-Cola Bottlers Consolidated facilities in Tillman's Corner, Robertsdale, Leroy and Vancleave after talks with the employer about a new contract broke down. At stake are first of all benefits for retirees - while workers, represented by Teamsters local 991, demand increased payments into their pension plans, the company wants to replace the current system with a what is know in the US as a 401(k) plan, which would considerably worsen the conditions, especially for veteran workers (A 401k retirement plan is a special type of account funded through pre-tax payroll deductions).

On the second day of the strike, no sign of readiness for compromise was received from the employer, who was using "managers, part-time workers and temporary workers to run the bottling line and make deliveries" However the union is confident this will not save the day for the company as the strike continues.

Coca Cola Bottlers Consolidated must value veteran workers and improve, not worsen pension plans!
