Belgium: IUF affiliates block Coca-Cola factory gates to protest restructuring plans

IUF affiliates representing Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) workers in Belgium have started 3 days of action today (December 18, 2019) to protest the latest CCEP restructuring plan. Union members are blocking trucks going in and out of factories in Antwerp, Ghent, Chaudfontaine, Hasselt and Heppignies.

CCEP announced the destruction of 132 jobs as a result of the closure of two warehouses. This is the 27th restructuring that takes places at CCEP operations in Belgium in recent years. Management wants to bring in new workers who will be paid less than the workers that will be dismissed.

The last negotiation around restructuring plans took place on December 10 and management was very hostile to IUF-affiliated unions; the ABVV-FGTB the ACV-CSC. Both unions are demanding job security in the future, the maintenance of working conditions and remuneration for current and future workers and a fair social plan for workers who will lose their jobs in the current and in any future restructuring.
