Nicaragua: Agreement on salary increase at Coca-Cola FEMSA

Following negotiations that started in February, and despite the economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, National Beverages Industry Union (SUT-INARSA) secured an increase in wages.

The increased wages take effect from April 1 and cover 744 workers.

During the COVID 19 crisis, the union and the company are acting in coordination both in the production plant and in the sales sector. Vendors have a container with water and liquid soap in the trucks for constant hand washing. They are also given face masks and alcohol-based hand gel.

In the production plant, masks and gel are available as well and several points for hand washing have been installed.

In addition, the temperature of workers is monitored, and when someone has any symptoms the medical clinic sends them home on paid sick leave. Workers over 55 years old are also out on paid sick leave.

In case of infection in the production plant, the management will close the infected worker's line and workers on that line will be quarantined.

The Union, which celebrates its 41 years since its foundation in 2020, is amongst the unions in Nicaragua with the longest history and a long record of struggle on behalf of its members.
