Pakistan: amid hardship and political turmoil a new union is born

A newly formed union at the Coca-Cola distribution centre in Peshawar, northern Pakistan, has won legal recognition and is the 9th union in the Coca-Cola system in Pakistan.

With genuine, independent unions in all 6 bottling plants and 3 distribution centres Coca-Cola Pakistan is nearly 100% unionized.

With formal recognition by the Registrar of Trade Unions for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province the distribution workers in Peshawar can now negotiate collective agreements and fully exercise their trade union rights. This achievement is even more remarkable given the very difficult conditions workers and their families face - including years of conflict - in this area. Peshawar is the administrative centre and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan and is close to the border with Afghanistan.

The union at the Peshawar distribution centre was formed with the support of the IUF-affiliated Pakistan Food Workers' Federation (formerly the National Federation of Food, Beverages and Tobacco Workers NFFBTW).
