The Korean union battling the outsourcing and firing of housekeeping staff at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel in Seoul has won a crucial legal victory - but their struggle isn't over. Since January 1, 2006, members of the Renaissance Labour Union, a member of the IUF-affiliated Korean Federation of Service Workers' Unions (KFSU), have been picketing and demonstrating in front of the hotel, demanding to be reinstated as direct employees. The workers - most of whom had worked for the Renaissance Hotel as housekeeping staff since the establishment opened in 1988 - were transferred to a phony "independent" service company 5 years ago. As outsourced employees performing the same work as before, their wages fell by 60%! When the union took legal action, the workers were sacked.
On July 19, ruling in the civil lawsuit brought by the workers against the hotel, the Seoul Central District Court determined that the outsourcing was illegal, and ordered the hotel to reinstate the workers. For 18 months, the workers have continued their fight, despite intimidation by riot police and steep financial compensation claims by the hotel against demonstrating workers. This decision must not be frustrated by a legal appeal. Tell management at the Marriott Seould Renaissance to reinstate the workers now! Use the form below to send a message to the hotel, to the hotel owner Sambu Construction and to the Korean government, calling for the rapid implementation of the court decision and the workers' immediate reinstatement as direct employees.
