Freedom for Iran Sugar Union Leaders - Drop the Charges!
While 3 of the leaders of Iran's Haft Tapeh sugarworkers union sentenced to one-year prison terms in April have had their convictions cancelled on appeal, two union leaders - president Ali Nejati and communications officer communications officer Reza Rekhshan - still face prison sentences while their appeal process drags. Their imprisonment would be a severe blow to the workers' struggle for an independent union. The charges against Rekhshan include providing information to foreign trade unionists and journalists on the horrendous working conditions at Haft Tapeh. Ali Nejati has also been blacklisted from all work and his family situation is increasingly desperate. The government is seeking to crush the union and intimidate all Iranian workers with prison terms for acting against "national security" in connection with last year's strike and the formation of the union. It must not succeed - tell the government of Iran to drop all charges against these two union leaders and reinstate Ali Nejati to his job! You can support the Haft Tapeh workers by using the form below to send a message to the state and judicial authorities.
