Workers are again organizing at the Smithfield pork slaughtering plant in North Carolina. The IUF-affiliated UFCW is building a community-based, national and international campaign to support Smithfield workers right to organize, free from the threat of harassment and violence.

The UFCW already represents workers at many Smithfield plants in the USA. Many of the company's plants in Poland and France are also organized by IUF affiliates. Workers in North Carolina are seeking the same rights as other unionized workers at Smithfield. However Smithfield remains actively hostile to union organizing and representation at the giant North Carolina plant.

Full details can be found in the March 2004 issue of WITNESS, the newsletter of the Justice for Smithfield Workers Campaign.

IUF affiliates representing Smithfield workers in the USA, France and Poland agreed in October 2003 to support this organizing campaign (click here for details).

You can support this campaign by sending a message to the Smithfield CEO demanding that the company obey the law and respect the rights of its workers to organize. Smithfield must stop using threats, intimidation and coercion to prevent the workers from exercising their rights.

Messages to Smithfield CEO and Board Chairman Joseph Luter can be sent to his e-mail address or to fax +1 757 365 3017.

Copies of messages should be sent to the UFCW
and to the IUF secretariat.
