The Spanish FECOHT-CC.OO continues its mobilization throughout Iberostar Hotels in the Canary Islands in defense of union officer Antonio Garcia Ramos. Ramos, union secretary at Iberostar, was sacked on December 11, 2006 for publicly denouncing working conditions at the hotels. Management objected to his public statements denouncing unsafe working conditions for hotel staff and the company's refusal to implement recommendations issued by the health and safety authorities.

The unions is fighting back around the slogan "Our union cannot be bought!" (Iberostar atiende, CC.OO. no se vende), a reference to Ramos' rejection of a December 29 management offer to drop his appeal for reinstatement in exchange for 300,506 euros. Over 600 union members rallied throughout Iberostar hotels in the Canary Islands on December 29 to demand the immediate reinstatement of the dismissed union leader and to make it clear that their jobs, their workplace safety and their union cannot be bought.

You can support their struggle by sending messages to Iberostar central management calling for the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of Antonio Garcia Ramos and full respect for trade union rights. Copies of your messages will automatically be forwarded to the union and to the IUF secretariat.
