Amnesty International has joined the worldwide campaign to free the imprisoned Musim Mas trade union leaders. The May issue of the Amnesty publication "The Wire" - estimated to reach over 500,000 human rights activists worldwide - contains an article on the case and calls for worldwide protests to be sent to the Indonesian authorities demanding freedom for the imprisoned Kahutindo leaders.

Amnesty writes: The singling out of these six men by the company, and their subsequent prosecution, suggest that they were targeted because of their role as union leaders. AI is concerned that the charges against the men may have been politically motivated and that the damage which occurred during the strike action was used by Musim Mas and the local authorities as an excuse to weaken the union.
