On December 11, 2006, union officer Antonio Garcia Ramos was fired without just cause from his job with the Spanish hotel and tourism conglomerate Iberostar. Management objected to his public statements denouncing unsafe working conditions for hotel staff and the company's refusal to implement recommendations issued by the health and safety authorities.

Ramos is the union secretary of the IUF-affiliated FECOHT-CC.OO for Iberostar hotels in the Canary Islands, where he has worked for over twenty years in the hotel industry. Iberostar operates hotels in 13 countries. The company's other operations include tourism (Viajes Iberia, Viajes Iberojet, Iberojet Internacional, Viajes Iberoservice, Iberoservice internacional), hotels (Iberostar, Hispano Alemana de Management Hotelero) and transport (Iberworld airlines, Aerobalear).

The IUF has sent a message to the company denouncing the firing as an egregious violation of basic trade union rights, and called upon its affiliates in countries where Iberostar has facilities to do the same.

You can support this struggle by sending messages to Iberostar central management calling for the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of Antonio Garcia Ramos and full respect for trade union rights. Copies of your messages will automatically be forwarded to the union and to the IUF secretariat.
