Nestlé Indonesia union leader in Switzerland

Eko Sumaryono, president of SBNIP, the union at the Nescafé factory in Panjang in Indonesia, met fellow trade unionists from the union UNIA in the towns of Orbe and Bern on 15-16 October 2009 while in Switzerland to attend an ILO event.

Eko was invited by the ILO to attend a symposium on Convention No. 98: The right to organize and collective bargaining. The invitation was fitting, as his union has been struggling for recognition of their right to negotiate wages and to full wage transparency for over 2 years at Nestlé in Indonesia. He took advantage of his stay in Switzerland to meet union activists and officials in Orbe, site of a Nescafé and Nespresso factory, and in Bern, where he joined a demonstration against "Nespressure" in front of a Nespresso shop.

UNIA reported about Eko's visit in their newspapers: read the articles in Work (in German) and in L'Evénement syndical (in French).
