Nestlé, the world's largest food company, carefully polishes and peddles its profile as a "responsible corporate citizen" - in its glossy presentations and publications, in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) get-togethers, even at the United Nations, where it now sponsors public events. But Nestlé workers and their unions around the world know a different Nestlé - a company which, given half a chance, never hesitates to violate international standards on trade union rights and Conventions of the United Nations' ILO in its ruthless quest for profit. Nestlé is a frequent visitor on the bench of the accused at the OECD, whose Guidelines require transnational companies to comply with international labour standards.
Nestlé workers confront a company which, while preaching responsibility, at various times and places, tells unions that they can't negotiate wages, that what it pays its workers is "confidential information" and that major changes in its operations through sell-offs or acquisitions have no relevance to workers or their unions (and that therefore it won't discuss them). Nestle management at national level frequently lies about employment conditions, claiming that there is a “global policy” to change shift patterns; to limit or deny annual bonuses; to replace annual wage increases with individually-based performance pay; etc, all of which is designed to reject union demands and escape responsibility (“It’s not our decision, it’s a global policy!”) Behind these lies is a global policy geared towards removing unions as obstacles to Nestle’s “growth model”, costing tens of thousands of jobs and incurring widespread rights violations. Unions are refused recognition while management supports rival workplace organizations. Union members and officers get the sack. And Nestlé never passes up an opportunity to abuse the use of "trainees", "temporary", "seasonal" and outsourced workers to limit direct employment - rejecting employer responsibility and violating the rights of Nestlé workers.
For growing numbers of Nestlé workers around the world, it's "Good Food - Good Life - Goodbye to Union Rights in the Workplace". The IUF and its affiliates have been fighting major violations of basic rights at Nestlé in, among other countries, Indonesia, India, Korea, Hong Kong and Tunisia.
