About the campaign

Mondelēz International, the transnational snack foods company created last October when Kraft Foods was split in two, claims to be a company with a dream to “create delicious moments of joy for our consumers, employees and communities around the world.”

The company has created no joy for its employees in Egypt and Tunisia, two countries where people gave their lives in the fight for democratic rights. Mondelēz decided that rights stopped at their factory gates. Trade union leaders in both countries were brutally dismissed by Kraft for attempting to exercise fundamental human rights. Mondelēz, the rights abuser formerly known as Kraft, refuses to acknowledge these violations and take corrective action.

In one of its many acquisitions, Kraft, now Mondelēz, took control of a factory in Norway where 12 paintings by the Norwegian master Edvard Munch had been commissioned for the cafeteria in 1922. The company had no desire to have their workforce enjoy their lunch in the presence of fine art and noting the value of these paintings, moved to sell the entire collection. Because of the importance of these works, the City of Oslo decided that the cafeteria and its surroundings would become a protected heritage park in Norway. As a result, all potential buyers backed out.

Until Mondelēz reinstates the workers in Egypt and Tunisia whose rights have been trampled on, respects the rights of workers everywhere throughout its operations and supply chain, and engages with the IUF on respecting workers’ rights, there is no delicious world but only the agonizing world of Munch’s iconic “The Scream”:
