Brazil-China: Petrobras and PetroChina Evaluate Joint Ethanol Production

Two major state-owned companies, the Brazilian energy giant Petrobras and PetroChina, signed on 23 December a six-month memorandum of understanding to explore joint projects to produce cane-based ethanol in Brazil and export it to China.

Press sources said that the projects would be carried out by Petrobras’ biofuels subsidiary, Petrobras Biocombustivel, and PetroChina International Company Ltd. A Petrobras statement said that China has adopted a policy of blending ethanol with gasoline to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but the country cannot supply the domestic market with local production alone.
