Kenya: KUSPAW branch reaches collective agreement at Nzoia Sugar Company

On 24 September 2014, an agreement for Nzoia Sugar was concluded at Kisumu during the joint industrial council, covering a total of 931 unionisable employees, including 75 women.

Tanzania: TPAWU wage agreement at Illovo’s Kilombero at 5 percent

On August 28, the Tanzania Plantation Agricultural Workers Union (TPAWU) signed a wage agreement with Kilombero Sugar Company Limited, a subsidiary of Illovo Sugar, granting a five percent wage increase across the board. According to the union, some 5,070 employees are covered by the agreement. Payments will be retroactive of April 1st, 2014.

South Africa: FAWU and sugar unions launch strike in the Sugar Sector

Today, 27 May 2014, over 5,500 workers in the sugar milling and refining value-chain launched a protected strike to support their demands for:

  • Wage increment of 11 percent across the board
  • 40-hour working week
  • Monthly housing subsidy of ZAR 800
