Spain: Unions reach collective agreement in the sugar sector

Agroalimentaria from Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) and FITAG from the UGT that represent sugar workers in Spain, both IUF affiliates, signed a two-year collective agreement on 21 June, with representatives from the employers.

Zambia: Zambia Sugar workers receive performance bonus

 

According to local sources, for the first time in the history of Zambia Sugar, all unionised employees received a 20 percent Performance Related Bonus for the 2012/2013 crushing season.

South Africa: Unions reached a wage agreement in the sugar sector.

On 24 May, a long and difficult negotiating process under the National Bargaining Council for the Sugar Manufacturing and Refining Industry finalised with an agreement that granted an 8 percent increase across the board on basic wages/salaries.

Swaziland: SAPAWU signs agreement at Ubombo Sugar Ltd.

On 17 May, the Swaziland Agricultural, Plantation and Allied Workers Union (SAPAWU) signed an agreement with Ubombo Sugar Ltd., an Illovo Sugar subsidiary covering some 1,800 workers. The agreement is effective from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2014.

United States: Twenty-month lockout ends at American Crystal

On April 13, union members of the BCTGM approved a new contract, twenty months after their employer, American Crystal, had locked them out. It was their fifth vote, which returned a 55 percent approval. Some 1,300 workers had been out of work since August 2011, many of whom have left the job or retired.

Tanzania: TPAWU concludes Collective Bargaining at Illovo’s Kilombero Sugar

On 25 April, the Tanzania Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union (TPAWU) concluded negotiations at Kilombero Sugar Co. (KSC), with a wage increase of 10 percent across the board.
