As a result of the ongoing work in the sugar sector of the English-speaking Caribbean, the IUF global sugar program and the sugar unions are developing an activity to build capacities within the unions to run solidarity campaigns, collect and transfer information, and support the unions’ daily work related to the sector, particularly in the present moment of changes in the EU/ACP sugar trade arrangements.

The training program is divided in three sections: (a) practical and technical issues concerning the Internet; (b) occupational safety and health; and (c) a peer-evaluation of the representatives’ work.
Union representatives would work with the IUF global sugar coordinator and other resource personnel to prepare the material and information required for the training course, which would be held on 5-11 February 2007, in Georgetown, Guyana.
The activity is an interregional effort coordinated by IUF global sugar: the Internet sessions would be conducted by Jasper Goss from the IUF Asia/Pacific regional organisation, with support from Jorge Chullén, IUF global sugar coordinator; the occupational safety and health sessions are responsibility of Jesper Nielsen, from 3F, a Danish federation affiliated to the IUF; the Guyanese union GAWU is providing staff support, kindly opened its headquarters for the training, and has ensured wireless connection to the Internet; while financial support is graciously provided by the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW), another IUF affiliate.
