South Africa: Wage increase for five thousand sugar workers

On 17 June, the National Bargaining Council for Sugar Manufacturing and Refining Industry reached an agreement providing a 6.5 percent wage increase across the board effective 1 April, and a further 1 percent compounded increase by 1 October 2015. The Council groups six companies as employers and three unions representing approximately 5,000 workers in the sector. Among the latter is the IUF affiliate Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU).

An addendum to the agreement specifies that negotiations on the establishing a Sick Fund will start in September, with the premise that it will not have cost implications for the employers unless subsequently agreed to. The Sick Fund negotiations will not go beyond the end of December, and has an implementation date of no later than 1 January 2016.
