The world’s largest food processing companies often drive important trends in this broad and diverse sector. These companies include Nestlé, the world’s largest food processing company, and other global corporations like Unilever, Mondelēz, Cargill, Barry Callebaut, and the Kraft Heinz Company. However, in many parts of the world, the major global food processing companies do not have a dominant market share nor do they employ a majority of food processing workers. Many food processing workers in these countries work at small to medium enterprises.

Established in 2017, the IUF Food Processing Division brings together IUF’s food processing membership in both global companies and small to medium enterprises. The division seeks to address the issues and concerns of those employed in the food processing industry: health and safety, financial short-termism and its impacts, declining or stagnant wages, and migrant worker rights. The division works to educate and mobilize the IUF’s existing food processing membership and also prioritises organizing new workers into the union to increase union membership and power within the sector.
