April 11, 2017 McDonald's Korea announced the recognition of IUF affiliate Arbeit Workers' Union as the collective bargaining representative for McDonald's workers. The union formally established a McDonald's chapter in November 2016.
Workers at the giant Haft Tapeh sugar cane plantation and mill complex in the southern city of Shush have always had to fight for their wages and their rights. In 2008, workers formed an independent union - affiliated to the IUF - following a 42-day strike to demand long-standing wage arrears. Conditions have worsened since the company was privatized in 2015. The workers and their union face repression as they once again demonstrate to claim massive wage and benefit arrears.
The IUF-affiliated Unite Union has reached agreement with Restaurant Brands, the company which manages KFC, Starbucks, Carls Jr and Pizza Hut, on a new two-year collective agreement which has been approved by 98% of its members.
Following a series of recent farmworker wins in the Southern United States, farmers elected to the North Carolina State Legislature are trying to use their legislative power to stop workers on their own farms from organizing for better wages and working conditions. Farm Bill S615 aims to stop the progress that farmworkers are achieving by making it illegal for farmers to deduct dues from union members as well as making it more difficult for farmworkers to win union contracts. Italy's national center CGIL joined with farmer, environmental, food activist and other groups in a mass demonstration in Rome on July 5 to demand the Italian Parliament reject ratification of the EU-Canada 
Alberto Román Acosta González, president of the Guacarí SINTRAINAGRO branch in Colombia's Valle del Cauca, was fatally shot by gunmen on a motorcycle on July 1 while watching his son play football. His murder comes not long after President Juan Manuel Santos proudly announced that Colombia was no longer identified by the ILO as a country which violates workers' rights.
The IUF organized a demonstration and press conference in Geneva on June 13 to highlight ongoing, brutal violations of fundamental worker rights by the government of Algeria. With the support of Swiss and international union organizations, trade unionists who travelled from Algeria to Geneva for the International Labour Conference at the ILO called for an end to the systematic government repression of workers seeking to organize independent trade unions.
The IUF-affiliated Peninsula Employees Union has filed for industrial action at the upscale hotel in response to management's aggressive attacks on working conditions and basic workplace rights. Management's refusal to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement in good faith has provoked the threat of a major industrial dispute, compounding tensions arising from ongoing harassment and disciplinary action against union leaders.
