Now recognized, Arbeit Workers' Union starts negotiations with McDonald's Korea

On ALBAApril 11, 2017 McDonald's Korea announced the recognition of IUF affiliate Arbeit Workers' Union as the collective bargaining representative for McDonald's workers. The union formally established a McDonald's chapter in November 2016.

Iran: Haft Tapeh sugar workers are fighting for their wages, pensions and rights!

1084Workers at the giant Haft Tapeh sugar cane plantation and mill complex in the southern city of Shush have always had to fight for their wages and their rights. In 2008, workers formed an independent union - affiliated to the IUF - following a 42-day strike to demand long-standing wage arrears. Conditions have worsened since the company was privatized in 2015. The workers and their union face repression as they once again demonstrate to claim massive wage and benefit arrears. Gains in new collective agreement for fast food workers in New Zealand

Unitelogo_1The IUF-affiliated Unite Union has reached agreement with Restaurant Brands, the company which manages KFC, Starbucks, Carls Jr and Pizza Hut, on a new two-year collective agreement which has been approved by 98% of its members.

IUF and Sodexo sign international agreement on preventing sexual harassment in the workplace

The IUF has signed an international agreement with the French-based catering and services provider Sodexo on measures to prevent sexual harassment at the workplace. The IUF-Sodexo Joint Commitment, based on a shared recognition that sexual harassment is a human rights violation and that women working in the services are exposed to high levels of risk, sets out a policy and procedures for ensuring zero tolerance. 

Spain: Unions challenge fake 'service providers' impoverishing hotel workers

'Multi-service providers'  have prospered under Spain's 2012 austerity-driven labour market 'reforms' in hotels and the wider service sector. Employees are dismissed and then re-employed by the service company, still performing their previous job but at a fraction of their previous wage. Under this scheme, 120,000 hotel housekeepers in Spain have lost 40% of their pay since 2012.

Defend US farmworkers' right to organize!

1083Following a series of recent farmworker wins in the Southern United States, farmers elected to the North Carolina State Legislature are trying to use their legislative power to stop workers on their own farms from organizing for better wages and working conditions. Farm Bill S615 aims to stop the progress that farmworkers are achieving by making it illegal for farmers to deduct dues from union members as well as making it more difficult for farmworkers to win union contracts. Italian unions, farmer and civil society groups say 'No!' to CETA

RomeCETA.2jpgItaly's national center CGIL joined with farmer, environmental, food activist and other groups in a mass demonstration in Rome on July 5 to demand the Italian Parliament reject ratification of the EU-Canada CETA free trade agreement. The government is pushing for a vote on July 25.

Sugar union leader murdered in Colombia

SINTRAINAGROAlberto Román Acosta González, president of the Guacarí SINTRAINAGRO branch in Colombia's Valle del Cauca, was fatally shot by gunmen on a motorcycle on July 1 while watching his son play football. His murder comes not long after President Juan Manuel Santos proudly announced that Colombia was no longer identified by the ILO as a country which violates workers' rights.

Inaugural IUF Food Processing Conference

IUF, international support for independent unions in Algeria fighting for rights and challenging repression

Algeria1The IUF organized a demonstration and press conference  in Geneva on June 13 to highlight ongoing, brutal violations of fundamental worker rights by the government of Algeria. With the support of Swiss and international union organizations, trade unionists who travelled from Algeria to Geneva for the International Labour Conference at the ILO called for an end to the systematic government repression of workers seeking to organize independent trade unions.

New York City fast-food workers win scheduling rights

The mayor of New York has signed a package of bills benefitting some 65,000 fast food workers, the key component of which is a requirement that fast food restaurants schedule their workers at least two weeks in advance or pay extra for shift changes.

New Zealand McDonald's workers gain new collective agreement

Members of the IUF-affiliated Unite Union in New Zealand have overwhelmingly endorsed the agreement reached by the bargaining group and McDonald's. The agreement covers all McDonald's restaurants in New Zealand, including those franchised, and the improvements apply only to Unite members.

Workers at Asahi Australia need permanent jobs, not casual work

Three years after Japan's Asahi Group set up a bottling plant in Albury-Wodonga, Australia, 50% of the workers at the factory are still stuck in insecure casual employment. The IUF-affiliated National Union of Workers (NUW) is currently negotiating a new workplace agreement for the site. A key demand is the creation of 40 permanent jobs for casual workers at Asahi. Philippines: strike action looms as rights abuses continue at luxury Manila Peninsula Hotel
