IUFPostcardsMembers of the IUF North American affiliate BCTGM have provided tremendous support to the IUF campaign to hold the company to account for alleged human rights violations. After union officials distributed over 3000 handbills to members working at Mondelez locations in 5 states informing members about the Screamdelez campaign, members have signed postcards to CEO Irene Rosenfeld demanding she talk to the IUF.

Korean Women's union challenges abusive treatment of janitors at Hyatt Regency Incheon

Hyattincheon1Since December 3 the Korean Women's Trade Union (KWTU) has been holding rallies in front of the Incheon Hyatt Regency to protest the abusive treatment of women janitors. Since this department was outsourced women janitors have been employed under new work contracts without notification and paid for only 6 of an 8-hour shift.

US/India row over diplomat's arrest should not obscure domestic worker's abuse

The Indian government's response to the arrest of a senior diplomat by US authorities for concealing the exploitation of her domestic worker misses the real issue, according to the International Domestic Workers Federation, which is calling for international action to defend the worker.

The Migrant Workers Convention, a core human rights instrument, remains a well-kept secret, and for good reason. Countries which ratify the Convention undertake to defend the full range of human rights and freedoms which migrants enjoy under international law, including (Article 26) the right to freely join a trade union to defend their interests. Were the terms of the Convention respected, states would be required to act against the abuse and rampant exploitation which are the fate of most migrant workers.

December 16 marks the two-year anniversary of the brutal police assault on striking oil workers in the western Kazakhstan town of Zhanaozen which left 17 people dead. Of the thirty-seven workers tried, 7 remain imprisoned today.

Brazilian tourism workers on strike in Curitiba

Hotel and restaurant workers in Curitiba, the capital city of the Brazilian state of Parana, have been on strike since November 30 against the employers' refusal to increase wages.

IUF Mondelez affiliates meet to build global organisation

Unions representing workers in Mondelez around the world came together at the Unite Centre at Eastbourne, UK on December 4-5 for a meeting convened by the IUF. They resolved to strengthen global cooperation and organization and to escalate the campaign until dismissed union leaders in Egypt and Tunisia obtain justice, the company recognizes the right of the Cadbury union in Pakistan to negotiate on behalf of precarious workers seeking regular permanent employment and Mondelez talks to the IUF with the intention of resolving outstanding human rights issues.

Accor hotels again attacking workers and their rights - this time in Indonesia

Workers at the Accor Group's Ibis Tamarin hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, have been struggling for rights and recognition since their union was formed and legally registered in August 2012. Management's aggressive response to their efforts to claim their rights has now escalated.

Meliá and IUF sign international worker rights agreement

The IUF and Meliá Hotels International have signed an agreement confirming Melia's commitments to respect fundamental rights at work, including but not limited to freedom of association and collective bargaining.

 

 

 

Trade union rights are human rights! Pearl Continental Karachi workers rally on International Human Rights Day

Members and leaders of the union at the upscale Pearl Continental Hotel in Karachi, Pakistan and their supporters rallied at the Karachi Press Club on December 10, International Human Rights Day, to highlight the ongoing struggle for basic rights and recognition. Participants denounced management's refusal to recognize the union and reinstate dismissed workers despite multiple court orders and a decision by the ILO dating back over a decade.

US fast-food workers strike over low wages in nationwide protests

Thousands of fast food workers went on strike across the USA on December 5, in a signal of the growing clamour for action on income equality. Low wage workers were due to strike across 100 cities through the day, including Boston, Detroit, New York City, Oakland, Los Angeles and St Louis (read more here).
