Vitasoy Australia Workers Take Industrial Action

Following a strike vote in which the NUW membership at Vitasoy Australia voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action, NUW members went out on strike for 24 hours on Friday, 30 September. They will organize further rolling industrial action the following weeks.

Poland : Coca-Cola workers organise

IUF affiliate Solidarnosc has successfully run an organising initiative among the workers in Coca-Cola Radzymin near Warsaw, Poland. More than 100 workers out of a workforce of close to 300 joined the new union local, more than doubling the number of union members in the country, where previously smaller locals existed only in the factory in Lodz and a distribution center in Gdynia.

Settlement ends long strike at New York Boathouse Restaurant

The bitter conflict at the Boathouse Restaurant in New York City's Central Park ended on September 22 when Local 6 and the New York Hotel Trades Council settled the issues leading to the 44-day strike. After fighting the workers' effort to organize for months, the Boathouse agreed to recognize the union and reinstate all fired union supporters.

Justice and union jobs for all Hershey workers!

The walkout by some 400 "educational exchange" workers at a facility packing and distributing products for US chocolate maker Hershey has exposed one of corporate America's privileged strategies for destroying union jobs through outsourcing. These formerly union jobs were triply outsourced in a long-running scheme to eliminate directly employed unionized workers at Hershey and destroy the jobs of the IUF-affiliated BCTGM, whose work this once was.

Kraft Foods cutting jobs and stealing severance pay from BCTGM members

On May 19, 2011 Kraft Foods informed the BCTGM that the warehouse in Norcross, Georgia, will close and jobs previously performed by BCTGM-represented workers will be transferred to a non-union third-party operation within thirty miles (48 kilometers) of the union warehouse.

This outsourced employer, Exel, is the same employer who has been recently accused of exploiting foreign students on summer visas working in a warehouse  located in Palmyra, Pennsylvania, packaging products for the Hershey Company.

On September 2, Daniel Urai, general secretary of the IUF-affiliated Fijian National Union of Hospitality Catering and Tourism Industries Employees (NUHCTIE) and union organiser Nitin Goundra  will go on trial for “unlawful assembly”.  Their real “crime” is to have met and advised members about pending collective bargaining negotiations with hotel management. The case is just one in a long line of incidents of assault, harassment and intimidation of union leaders in Fiji over recent months.

New York: Boathouse Restaurant workers strike against unfair labor practices

60 employees of the Boathouse Restaurant in New York’s Central Park walked off their jobs on August 9 and were joined on the picket line by 37 of their co-workers who were illegally terminated in retaliation for organizing a union. Boathouse workers began organizing in 2009 because of very low wages, stolen overtime pay, long hours, no benefits, unsafe conditions, rampant favoritism, sexual harassment, ethnic discrimination, and extremely abusive managers.
