In May 2017 Murray Goulburn announced that they were closing their 125 year old Kiewa plant in Victoria Australia,a move which would had destroyed secure employment in the small community.

National Union of Workers (NUW) shop stewards held mass meetings with local, state and federal politicians to emphasise the importance of the jobs, and joined the wider community in petitioning Murray Goulburn to meet with the union for urgent discussions.

In the meantime Murray Goulburn was acquired by the Canadian dairy TNC Saputo who announced in May 2018 that they would keep the factory open.

The workers and their union succeeded in their determination to keep dairy jobs in the community and the NUW is now seeking to meet with Saputo for a joint effort to rebuild the relationship with farmers and for investment in the site.
