U.S chicken companies are once again seeking US Department of Agriculture (USDA) approval to increase line speeds from 140 to 170 birds per minute.

The move is strongly opposed by unions, academics and meat inspectors citing worker safety and food safety concerns.

Poultry processing lines have injury and illness rates already 64% above the national average as workers suffer cuts, infections and repetitive strain injuries.

If the USDA grants the increase it will reverse a 2014 Obama administration decision to limit poultry plant line speeds.
