The Transport and General Workers Union in the UK, one of the IUF’s UK affiliates, recently signed an important agreement with the global catering company, the Compass Group, recognizing the rights of employees to join a union and guaranteeing recognition of the TGWU where it can show membership in a COMPASS facility (subject to there not being another union present at that facility).

The IUF welcomes this kind of agreement that puts on paper the rights guaranteed by internationally recognized conventions. IUF general secretary Ron Oswald commented, “We welcome this clear statement by the company confirming its employees’ right to a free choice of union membership and agreeing to voluntarily recognize the union they choose. We would expect COMPASS throughout its operations to continue to display its willingess to be a fair employer in this manner, an employer that fully recognizes its employees’ right to union membership of their choice.”
