IUF affiliate Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) is campaigning against the Labour government in Bermuda over their union-busting efforts to facilitate decertification of trade unions.

  • The Bermuda government has enacted the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 2021, now law as of June 1, 2021, which allows non-union members who are part of the bargaining unit to vote in a ballot for decertification of the union
  • BIU, backed by a majority of all affiliates of the Bermuda Trade Union Congress (BTUC), strongly believes that only union members in a bargaining unit should have the right to vote to decertify the union
  • BIU held a two-day shutdown at the end of August and as of September 13 is holding weekly one-day protest actions until the Government reverses its decision

The IUF Caribbean Region together with the IUF Secretariat are supporting BIU in this effort including the organizing of international solidarity actions.

BIU President Chris Furbert stated “It has been extremely frustrating to understand how a Labour Government that is supported by Labour remains firm in a position that weakens trade unions. BIU will campaign in any possible way, including asking international support, to change the Government’s position.”
