Sheraton hotels and resorts are part of the Starwood Group, whose other brands include Westin, St. Regis, Méridien, W Hotels and the Luxury Collection. Starwood calls them "distinct lifestyle brands" - upscale accommodations for affluent travelers and vacationers. But brutal violations of the human rights of the company's employees can be part of that distinct lifestyle. Recently, workers at Sheraton hotels in Ethiopia and Maldives sought to exercise a basic human right: negotiate through their unions their employment terms and conditions. They got Sheraton management's full service abuse treatment - brutal mass dismissals and intimidation. CLICK HERE TO SEND A MESSAGE TO STARWOOD

Multiple threats to democracy

13.01.15 Editorial

Journalists
Millions of citizens demonstrated across France on January 11 in solidarity with the victims of related terrorist attacks on the weekly Charlie Hebdo and on shoppers in a kosher market. Unions called on their members and on citizens to rally in support of the 'republican values' of freedom, equality, fraternity, and were very much in evidence. In the face of such attacks, these are the right slogans. Terrorism in all its varieties is a frontal attack on the democratic values of the labour movement.

Breakthrough in Greece? Austerity and solidarity

12.01.15 Editorial

Greece will hold parliamentary elections on January 25 and Syriza, the left-wing party which has consistently called for debt restructuring and an end to austerity, is leading the polls. The IMF-European Commission-European Central Bank `Troika' are warning of the "threat" of Syriza coming to power and have forcefully indicated their support for Greece's ruling coalition by conditioning further financial support on the re-election of a pliable government. A Syriza victory indeed threatens the suffocating grip of the European and global austerity regime, and for that reason should be welcomed and actively supported.
