The collective agreement expired on 10 January and members are seeking the pay rise that would have been due if the Company had not decided to relocate the operation to Northgate in Brisbane. This pay rise would flow through the redundancy provisions in the collective agreement that are capped for most workers at 52 weeks. After the talks in relation to a closure package have broken down, members of AMWU voted to commence an indefinite strike at 11 pm tonight Wednesday, February 19th.
Protected industrial action started on the next day. Heinz is still refusing to negotiate. Instead, some union members including an elected delegate have been given notice that they will be made redundant on March 28.
