Protest actions launched by the IUF-affiliated hotel and tourism workers' union federation, HLOB, on September 10 have escalated into strike action by hotel workers in the Bagan Archaeological Zone, a major tourist attraction and cultural heritage site. The strike was called on October 12 to demand the reinstatement of 12 elected union leaders and union members who were unfairly terminated on August 24. Hotel and tourism workers led by HLOB marched through the historical sites of Bagan in support of the striking workers and have held protest actions every day since October 12.

Management responded by threatening the non-renewal of one year fixed term contracts that expire this month, exposing the abusive precarious employment arrangements common at hotels in Bagan and its use by employers to prevent union organizing and collective bargaining.
