Argentine, Brazilian unions and governments agree to work together to promote union rights in the meat sector

At the initiative of the IUF Latin American Region(REL-UITA), a meeting of meat unions and government officials from Argentina and Brazil was convened in Buenos Aires on November 27 where a groundbreaking agreement was signed to promote cooperation and assistance in government labour policies and on the elimination of human trafficking.

The action was organized by the IUF's affiliates FLAI-CGIL and UILA-UIL.

Nicaragua: Pepsi's distributor sacks 70 workers for forming a union!

International union solidarity with Hong Kong democracy movement

CSCHongKong IUF members around the world continue to show solidarity with the Hong Kong democracy movement and the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions, whose members took strike action on September 29 in support of the movement and remain actively involved. Most recently, on November 17, the IUF-affiliated ACV-CSC food and services union in Belgium declared their solidarity and support for their Hong Kong trade union colleagues and "the fight of the people of Hong Kong for democratic elections."

Nestlé defies Korean Supreme Court and provokes strike

Nestle%20Lotte%20dispute%202014Workers at the Nestlé/Lotte joint venture went on strike on 13 November after the company refused to accept a Supreme Court decision from December 2013 that declared that regular bonuses should be calculated as part of ordinary wages. The decision was further formalized by a Corrective Order issued by the Ministry of Employment in October this year. Other TNC's have complied with the ruling.

 

 

 

Unions back biggest protest yet against TPPA in New Zealand

Belgian unions reject austerity, protests to continue and escalate

The new measures would reduce wage earners' purchasing power by 2% annually through changes to cost-of-living indexation, impose limitations on wage bargaining, reduce unemployment benefits and support for young job-seekers and raise the retirement age from 65 to 67 years, among other regressive measures.

Trans-Atlantic solidarity for union activist dismissed by Hormel

Government of South Korea must act to halt massive abuse of migrant agricultural workers

The migrant workers on whom South Korean agriculture depends suffer appalling living and working conditions, and the government's Employment Permit Scheme (EPS) directly contributes to this exploitation, according to a new report (Bitter Harvest) from Amnesty International. The report documents intimidation and violence, squalid accommodation, excessive working hours, unpaid overtime, an absence of weekly rest days and workers forced to apply pesticides without protective clothing. Rural development workers in Niger continue strike action for pay equity

Unions of rural development workers in Niger, representing public employees in agricultural research and engineering, agronomists and water resource specialists have announced a 5-day strike for November 3-7 as they continue to fight for essential benefits and pay equity with other public sector workers denied them since 2008.  

Fatal workplace accident at Indian sugar mill supplying PepsiCo

A worker at the Olam Interntional sugar mill in Kolhapur (Maharashtra) India was killed by falling sugar bags in a workplace accident on August 8 which also severely injured two other workers. According to the union representing plant workers, the factory has a long history of workplace accidents. But Singapore-based Olam, a major transnational commodity processor and trader, last year received a USD 120 million loan from the World Bank's private lending arm IFC, whose lending criteria ostensibly include safety, social and environmental safeguards.
