In June the IUF launched a global campaign for action to protect workers in the hotel sector from sexual harassment and assault. Marriott, in response, has rejected the IUF call for negotiations.
The housekeepers and valets of the upscale Hotel Be Live Experience in Lanzarote, in Spain's Canary Islands, are on strike against outsourcing and precarious jobs. Workers are required to clean up to 26 rooms per shift in addition to cleaning other areas, compelling them to work up to 10 hours a day without stopping to eat to complete their assignments.
After several months of discussions between the IUF affiliated UTHGRA, the private sector and the government, a Good Practices Manual on work in hotels and restaurants has been approved and published. UTHGRA's investigations and work in support of the IUF Global Housekeepers Campaign was the stimulus and the basis for the development of the manual.
