Nestlé US subsidiary cited in death of temp worker

The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Tribe Mediterranean Foods, a subsidiary of Nestle SA, for 18 alleged violations of workplace safety standards following the death of a contract worker at its Taunton, Mass., production plant. The worker, who was pulled into the machine he was cleaning and sterilizing and crushed to death, had received no training in hazardous energy control involving shutting off the machine and its power supply before performing any work. Other contract workers performing the cleaning had likewise received no training.

Pakistan: Union secures hundreds of permanent jobs for casual workers at Nestlé Kabirwala

An agreement has been reached in Pakistan under which hundreds of casual jobs at the Nestle Kabirwala dairy plant will be converted to permanent jobs, finally resolving a long and difficult conflict. With the end of years of precarious employment hundreds of workers will not only enjoy job security for the first time, but will also be able to exercise their trade union rights.

"They told us we didn't work for Nestlé," said Ashfaq Butt, President of the Action Committee Nestlé Workers Kabirwala, who has worked for 7 years as a contract worker at the Kabirwala factory. "But now under this agreement we are recognized as working for Nestlé and can go to the factory as permanent workers for the first time."

That claim is no longer made - apparently the communications folks at Nestlé were apprised that the GRI awards no ratings.

As Nestlé shareholders prepare for the annual shareholder meeting on April 19 Nestlé watchers should note that on April 6 a court in Kabirwala, Pakistan issued an arrest warrant for a manager named Jahangir at the labour contractor which has been supplying hundreds of contract workers under abusive conditions to Nestlé's milk factory in the town.

New York City hotel workers say 'Stop Nespressure!'

Members of New York City's Hotel and Motel Trades Council turned out in force for a spirited action at Nestlé's Nespressure boutique on Madison Avenue on Manhattan's trendy Upper East Side on March 30. Some 60 union members chanted, distributed hundreds of 'Stop Nespressure' leaflets to residents and tourists about Nestlé's violations of trade union rights in Indonesia and Pakistan.
